Movie: Shaitan
Cast: Rajeev Khandelwal, Kalki Koechlin, Gulshan, Shiv Pandit, Neil Bhoopalam, Kirti Kulhari
Rating: ****
There resides a Devil (Shaitan) inside every individual waiting to unleash itself, it takes just one moment or incident to do that and then follows annihilation and chaos. Shaitan presents to you this evil side of every individual related to one incident.
The Movie starts by portraying the incomplete relationship between Ami (Kalki) and her mother. It then moves on to the story around a group of friends KC (Gulshan), Dash (Shiv Pandit), Tanya(Kirti)and Zubin (Neil) of which she becomes a part. These people are rich, spoilt, drink, smoke, do drugs, drive recklessly and do all the things that are termed as ‘bad’. One night of such imprudence leads to a road accident killing two innocent people. Then a series of incident unfold to hide one mistake. At this point good cop Mathur (Rajeev) makes an entry to sort out the chaos.
The spirit and energy of the movie is simply awesome. The entire Movie keeps you interested and on the edge. The movie has an underlying message and lesson to all the viewers about the consequences of drugs and negligence. The film showcases a bunch of characters never before seen in Hindi Cinema. It has brought out the grey side of all the individuals.
Director Bejoy Nambiar is a superstar. He has presented us with a real experience to cherish for a long time. Few shots in the film are simply out of the world experiences especially the shot where two parallel scenes are running with the Khoya khoya chand (Remix) playing in the background. The pace of the film goes up and down from time to time which keeps the grip. The camera work is superb and quite innovative; it makes you a part of the movie. The entire movie is made in a very stylish way and has brought something fresh to Bollywood. And above all the music forms the base of the film. It forms an important part of the narration, keeps it upbeat and interesting throughout.
Now the most intrinsic part is the performances which steal the show. Kirti Kulhari as Tanya, a struggling model does an impressive debut. Shiv Pandit as Dash, an orphan and drug peddler comes out pretty strong. Rajeev Khandelwal as the honest cop Mathur gives an admirable performance. Neil Bhoopalam as the horny and scared Zubin is excellent. Kalki as the whacked out Ami gives another promising performance. But the winner here is Gulshan Devaiah as the spoilt brat KC. He gives a stellar performance which will definitely remain memorable. Really looking forward to see more of him in Bollywood. On the negatives was the climax of the movie which let us down a little and wished more time was spent on building up the individual characters.
But Overall Shaitan comes out as a winner which kind of creates a cult in Hindi Cinema. It brings in something fresh for the audience to look out for. Go and join the Shaitan Gang to discover the devil inside.

Great review debs!
