An ensemble of Drugs, Sex and Mafia

Movie: Dum Maaro Dum
Cast:  Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati, Prateik Babbar
Rating: **1/2
Goa aane ka mast chill marne magar dum nahi marne ka...Drugs is definitely not the definition of fun in anyway. This movie shows how Drugs in any form in your life can ruin it forever without even a warning.
The movie intertwines four different lives ruined because of the same reason, drugs. It begins with the story of an innocent kid Lorry (Prateik) under dire circumstances is convinced into drug peddling that ends him up in jail. Then comes ex -corrupt cop Kamath (Abhishek) trying to clear his conscience by eradicating all evil through drugs. Joki (Rana) is a musician who is trying to prove Lorry innocent to protect him from the disaster that his lover Zoyi (Bipasha) ended up in. They have all suffered because of drugs and now they want to protect the others from it. It shows how the Mafia controlls the drug business in our own Goa and turns this little heaven into a dirty place with addiction, prostitution and murders.
The movie is about the business of drug peddling rather than drug addiction. It is a fast paced thriller but could’ve done away with most of the melodrama. It is a little over the top but it has touched a topic which needs social awareness.  I wished more movies are made on the topics of drug addiction in Bollywood.
Rohan Sippy has a smart and slick way of making movies. It is very stylish and reflects on his films. The Camera work is pretty good with some great shots of rave parties and snorting Coke and the accident scene. The music is very mediocre. The item number is pathetic making a disaster of the original music and lyrics. Deepika fails to sizzle in the dance number too. It had some weak points like the placement of the Thayn Thayn song and the action sequences. Abhishek was tolerable but did nothing special to bring sympathy towards his role at any time. Bipasha was quite wasted in an unimportant role. Rana has women swooning over him but his expressionless act won’t take him too far. Side acts by Gantois Gomes and Govind Namdeo were impressive. Aditya Pancholi was irritating. At last the winner of the cast is Prateik Babbar who with his natural act makes us empathise with him throughout.
The movie has its downsides but is a decent thriller after a long time. It is definitely worth a watch after the overdose of cricket. So my advice would be go and enjoy this thriller for its style, cast and the twists & turns.
