Top 5 Indian Web Series you just cannot Miss!

The introduction of OTT platforms in India has created a revolution for television. Television is no more synonymous with Saas Bahu sagas. It has great content, big budgets and top talents which is helping in bringing great television shows to the audience. We do not have to solely rely on the west for good television series now, our country is producing great shows too. It's time to push aside the Saas Bahu serials and shows like Big Boss. We have good content to look forward to.

Over the past few years with OTT platforms coming in we have watched quite a lot of Indian web series and here we have listed our TOP 5 from all of them.

5. Family Man (Amazon Prime)

We were a little unsure about which series to have as our fifth series on the list since there was some competition. We decided to settle on Family Man for its fun take on the dual life of a person (Shrikant) working for the safety of our country. The challenges that he has to face at his workplace as well as his personal life and trying to balance them both forms the base of the show. The story highlights a conspiracy threatening the safety of our country and the life of agent Shrikant who has been entrusted with the job of protecting our country from this threat. On the other hand, it also highlights the ways in which he has to keep his work a secret from his family and manage their expectations on a daily basis.

The show is funny, witty, and also focuses on the various terrorist threats attacking our country. The direction is commendable since the director handles both the funny, mundane and serious aspects of the story in a balanced manner. The cast is excellent right from Manoj Bajpayee as Shrikant being the heart of the show to the supporting cast that includes Priyamani as Shrikant’s wife Suchi, Neeraj Madhav as Moosa and Sharib Hashmi as JK. Everyone gives a very strong performance. You should definitely watch this show for being so relatable and realistic with a broader story.

The first season left us at a cliff hanger ending so we hope the next season can live up to the expectations.

      4. Panchayat (Amazon Prime)

The series is a beautiful satire about the village life of India through the eyes of a city bred boy named Abhishek. Every Episode in the series tackles individual issues in a satirical manner. The show highlights issues such as the urban-rural gaps, population control, caste discrimination, etc. The writing of the series is very intelligent and witty. There are dialogues and parts of the show which are hilarious. The direction and cinematography of the show are on point, except a few parts which is overdone.

Jitendra Singh as Abhishek is so convincing and believable. The remaining cast comprises of really powerful actors who live up to their talents.

This show is a must watch for everyone and especially the urban population to get a whiff of the rural world of our country. The show is witty, intelligent and very entertaining. We hope the second season can keep up the quality of the show.

    3. Paatal lok (Amazon Prime)

This series was one of the best Indian web TV series to be released during the  nationwide lockdown. It follows the journey of a struggling inspector who is assigned a high profile case which leads him to the dark world of the Netherland. It is a gripping crime thriller that explores multiple issues that plagues our country.

The socio-economic conditions of all the different characters in the series are compared with the mythological concepts of heaven, earth and hell. The story beautifully delves into the concept of the vicious cycle of violence and how it is so difficult to stop this cycle from repeating itself. The direction of Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy sets the tone of the series perfectly and keeps the audience engaged throughout. Jaideep Ahlawat gives a performance that will be etched in our memory for a long time. The rest of the acting ensemble gets into the skin of their character effortlessly. Due to Avinash Arun's  expertise in cinematography,  the cinematography of the series is something that stands out. Sudip Sharma has created a series that is powerful and thought provoking- not to be missed.

    2. Sacred Games (Netflix)

We think this is the series that hooked the Indian audience to quality content on Indian OTT platforms. Based on a book by Vikram Chandra, it centers around two main protagonist- the gangster Ganesh Gaitonde and the troubled policeman Sardar Singh, and it explores how their lives are connected and intertwined. The series gives us some of the most memorable characters in recent memory.

Season 1 is a top notch thriller where every episode keeps you on the edge. It explores multiple themes of friendship, betrayal, greed, lust and draws a parallel from mythological characters.

Season 2 was surprisingly panned by the viewers, but we think it took the series to another level. The season was philosophically very deep and it handled the perils of nuclear armament to humanity in a perfect manner. Pankaj Tripathi as Guruji is mesmerizing and completely steals the show in the second season.

The direction by Anuraj Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Neeraj Ghaywan bring the screenplay alive on the screen. The production value of this series was nothing which was seen before on Indian television and it set the precedent for all future series to come out of India. The performance of the entire ensemble is top notch.

Do not miss this series which introduced Indians to the world of top quality content on Indian OTT platforms.

      1. Delhi Crime (Netflix)

We believe this series is highly underrated but for us, it’s way up there. Delhi Crime follows the Delhi Police in their journey to arrest the culprits of the Nirbhaya Gang rape case. It gives us a glimpse of the difficulties and challenges that the Police force has to face to crack this particular case. It shows us all the different aspects that are involved in any criminal case in India.

The show has handled a sensitive case like this one with great care and presented it to us in a humane way. The direction by Richie Mehta is on point. He keeps the pace of the show steady and highlights every angle that plays a role in handling any criminal case in India. The cinematography, background music and script are all strong points of this show. Finally, the performances take the cake away for this show, especially by Shefali Shah. We have always believed that Shefali Shah is an underrated actress in Bollywood and has not received her due to the talent that she has. She is simply a powerhouse of talent and she proves it with her role in Delhi Crime. Every emotion she portrays with perfect precision and in a detailed manner. If you have not watched it yet please do so now and if you have I’m sure you will agree with us.

P.S. We had thoroughly enjoyed Mirzapur Season 1 but we believe it lacked in its script and Season 2 was quite a letdown. We heard rave reviews of Scam 1992 but haven't watched it yet, maybe we can review it once we have watched it.

  1. Very timely list. You could consider Breathe (part 1) and Bad Boy Billionaires too. What about Made in Heaven? I enjoyed the series.
