Movie: Lootcase (Hindi)
Cast: Kunal Khemu, Rasika Dugal, Gajraj Rao, Vijay Raaz, Ranvir Shorey
Rating: 3.5/5
The movie introduces us to our main protagonist Nandan Kumar who finds a red suitcase filled with cash (Rs. 10 crores) that changes his life and sets off a series of events.
The movie then goes into a flashback mode. This starts to build up the story and introduces us to an array of characters. We are introduced to the red suitcase and its journey into the hands of Nandan. The similar nexus of politicians and underworld dons are shown. Also, the aspirations of a simple hardworking family living in a Mumbai chawl are shown.
We are introduced to the Nat Geo obsessive character of Bala Rathod (Vijay Raaz) who is an underworld don and generates some genuine laughs and sets the mood of the movie. Nandan Kumar is the typical middle-class character who dreams of earning more money to keep his family happy. His aspiration for wealth is fulfilled when he gets hold of the suitcase full of money and turns his life around. The suitcase becomes an obsession for him, and he even starts imagining the non-living thing as a close friend of his. The glow of greed can be seen in Nandan's eyes whenever he opens the suitcase.
Then we are introduced to another interesting character of Kolte (Ranveer Shorey) who is an inspector and has been assigned to locate the lost suitcase. This sets the story rolling and keeps you involved in the movie.
Slowly it is visible that Nandan starts missing out on the little delights which come along with leading a simple and honest life. The bag full of money adds new stress to his life and his obsession with the money starts depriving him of the smaller joys like winning the Kirodimal Employee of the year for his genuine hard work and attending his son’s annual day in school.

The acting ensemble is like a fine-tuned instrument. Kunal Khemu as always is brilliant with his incredible comic timing. Rasika Duggal as his wife is perfect as the ethical wife who still needs a little bit more money for the house. Ranvir Shorey is the hidden gem of this film. He presents a wonderful blend of intensity and humor. Gajraj Rao and Handsome Vijay Raaz are both great with their deadpan comedy act.
Lootcase is a hilarious movie with some quirky characters and a strong message about human greed. You will definitely enjoy this ride.

As in numerous Hindi movies, this movie also adds a needless dance number. As the story progresses, Nandan also realizes that even with a full bag of money, he cannot reach the status of rich people and he will always remain simple at heart. The red suitcase signifies an opportunity for every character in the movie and how in the blind pursuit of it, the characters make misjudgments and mistakes which will harm them in the long run. The red suitcase signifies human greed which keeps on growing.
The dialogues of the movie are spot on. Some one-liners are so hilarious that you keep laughing long after the scene is over. They also made use of the dialect of a Mumbaikar very effectively.
The screenplay keeps the viewer engaged with its pace and story but fails to soar to a level of a memorable dark comedy.
The director Rajesh Krishnan is in control of the movie and gives every character their space to show their talent. He maintains a perfect balance between humor and storytelling.
The cinematographer Sanu Varghese captures the city of Mumbai beautifully, especially the night shots. He is even able to emphasize the class difference between the protagonist and the elite through shots of their living spaces.
